In 2011, the Mayor of the City
officially announced IBM’s nomination of the city of Philadelphia to be among
the 24 global cities that were participating in the Smarter Cities Challenge.
This initiative aimed to offer USD 50 million towards services and technology
to about 100 cities around the globe in the period of three years.
Philadelphia’s nomination
resulted in the bringing together of a group of technology experts, city
officials and local non-profit organizations who analyze and design ways to
leverage technology to enhance literacy and workforce training programs within
the city.
With an IBM investment of about
USD 400,000 – the city of Philadelphia have been able to transform the academic
and economical landscape by creating a smarter urban environment to work in.
With an aim to create a highly
trained workforce, the city has been able to provide stiff competition in the
global environment by optimizing technology and other resources such as the
internet, smart phones and laptops. The city has been committed to the use of
information to make better decisions and arrive and smarter solutions for the
most pressing economic and business issues that have impacted the world in
recent times.
By providing its human resources
access to literacy and vocational training programs, Philadelphia has been able
